Get the right balance ball size for your height and learn how much to inflate it for safe, effective sitting and exercise.

Quick answer

Choose your balance ball size by height: 55 cm for 5'0"–5'5", 65 cm for 5'6"–5'11", and 75 cm for 6'0"–6'3". Inflate to 90–95% firmness so it gives slightly when you sit. A properly inflated ball keeps hips level with or slightly above knees when seated.

Measure your height and match it to a ball size

Stand against a wall without shoes and mark your height. Use the balance ball size chart above to pick a starting size. If you're between sizes, go smaller for active sitting at a desk and larger for stretching or maternity use. Remember that ball diameter is measured when fully inflated; a soft ball will sit lower.

Inflate in stages and check firmness

Insert the pump nozzle into the valve and inflate in 10–15 pump intervals. After each interval, remove the nozzle and press the ball with your palm. You want a firm surface that yields about 1–2 cm under firm pressure. Overinflation makes the ball rock hard and prone to bursting; underinflation feels mushy and reduces stability.

Let the ball rest, then top off

New PVC balls stretch. After initial inflation, let the ball sit at room temperature for 24 hours. It will feel softer as the material relaxes. Top off with a few pumps to reach your target firmness. Repeat this rest-and-top-off cycle once more if the ball still feels loose after a day.

Check seated height and adjust

Sit on the ball with feet flat on the floor. Your hips should be level with or slightly higher than your knees. If your hips drop below your knees, add air. If you feel perched or unstable, remove a little air. For desk work, aim for a 90-degree knee angle. If the ball is too tall, consider a smaller size rather than deflating it too much.

Step-by-step: inflate and size your balance ball

  1. Measure your height: Stand barefoot against a wall and mark the top of your head. Match to the size chart: 55 cm for 5'0"–5'5", 65 cm for 5'6"–5'11", 75 cm for 6'0"–6'3". If between sizes, size down for desk sitting, up for stretching.
  2. Inflate in stages: Use a hand or foot pump. Add air in short bursts, checking firmness after every 10–15 pumps. Stop when the ball feels firm but still gives about 1–2 cm under your palm. Overinflation risks bursting; underinflation reduces stability.
  3. Let it rest 24 hours: New PVC stretches. After initial inflation, leave the ball at room temperature for a day. It will soften as it relaxes. Top off with a few pumps after resting to reach target firmness.
  4. Check seated height: Sit with feet flat. Hips should be level with or slightly above knees. Adjust air until your knees are at about 90 degrees for desk work. If hips drop below knees, add air; if unstable, remove a little.
  5. Recheck monthly: PVC slowly loses air. Check firmness every few weeks and top off as needed to maintain safe, effective use. A soft ball changes your seated posture and reduces benefit.
